Ever heard of soap nuts? Me neither until just recently when someone told me they were an amazing alternative to highly toxic and environment damaging laundry detergents. So I checked them out and now we sell them in our online shop.
Where Do Soap Nuts Come From?
They come from the Sapindus tree which is primarily located in Nepal and India. Although they are called nuts they are actually the fruit of the tree. Once they are dried they become hard like nuts. Soap nuts contain a high level of saponins on their outer shell. Saponins, which when added to water, slowly dissolve into a soapy liquid. Saponin is a natural surfactant. Surfactants work by breaking the surface water tension so it can penetrate into the fabrics easier allowing the water to break up the dirt, grease and grime from fabrics.
How Are Soap Nuts Processed?
How Do I Use Soap Nuts For Laundry?
Place 5 nuts in the cotton bag provided or in an old sock (and tie the end) and place them in your washing machine; you do not add detergent or fabric as the nuts are also a natural fabric softener. The soap nuts go through the wash and rinse cycles. When removing your laundry from the washing machine you should set the bag of nuts to the side because if you do cold water washes you can use the same soap nuts for 4 more loads of laundry; if you do warm water washes you can use the same soap nuts for 3 more loads of laundry; and if you do hot water washes you can use the same soap nuts for 2 more loads of laundry.
Other Benefits Of Using Soap Nuts
One of the first things you will notice is the lack of lint in the lint tray of your dryer. The reason is because soap nuts do not contain chemicals which break down the fibers in your clothing, so clothing lasts longer. You will notice lint when you wash towels and sweaters as they both contain shorter fibers.

How Long Do They Last?

Do They Work?
Yes. They contain surfactants. Surfactants work by breaking the surface water tension so it can penetrate into the fabrics easier allowing the water to break up the dirt, grease and grime from fabrics.
